Terrazzo is making a major comeback in 2019! Although this trend may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of a design trend, terrazzo these days is made with chips of marble, quartz, granite, or even glass set into a matrix of concrete or epoxy resin. This variety means that this material commonly seen on tiles is now making its way into furniture, like side tables, and providing inspiration for accessories such as planters and rugs.
Originating in Italy over 500 years ago, the composite material of marble chippings set into cement was created as a way to reuse the scrapped rock. Once the fragments are set, the surface is then polished to create a super-smooth finish. Traditionally sold as flooring, the material was popular in the 1970s and is back for 2019, replacing the marble trend of the last couple of years.
Terrazzo is a lot more than just a flooring material. It’s a design aesthetic that goes back thousands of years, while still retaining its unique influence today in the 21st century.
