It’s with much sadness that we say goodbye to the amazing event LDC Summit 2019. Luxury Design and Craftsmanship Summit 2019 was a dynamic and exciting event that took place in Gondomar (Oporto) at Pavilhão Multiusos, from June 26-27th. During that luxury event, there was a combination of Master Artisans that displayed their art in a live showcase, as well as interesting panels with important figures from the industry! Today, My Design Week is going to show you everything that you missed.

Day 1

Luxury Design and Craftsmanship Summit 2019: What You Missed

Luxury Design and Craftsmanship Summit 2019 was a very important event for the craftsmanship and luxury design industry. During this event, there were many local arts and crafts, represented by Master Artisans, such as Ceramics, Tiles, Stucco, Sacred Painting, Porcelain Painting, Silver Chiseling, Chiseling, Filigree, Metal Working, Jewelry, Wood Working, Bobbin Lace, Embedding, Notch, Gilding, Woodwork, Spring Wadding, Wadding, Weaving, Shoemaking, Embroidery from Madeira and Torno.

During this event, every attendee could participate through the live showcase of every Master Artisan and also through the dynamic workshop exhibitions. In between those same showcases, there were important panels that discussed many important subjects that are crucial on the luxury design and craftsmanship industry.

The first day began with an inspirational opening speech from Amândio Pereira, the CEO of the Covet Group, that kickstarted the 2nd Edition of the Luxury Design & Craftsmanship Summit 2019. He spoke about the importance of every maker and craftsmen, as well as the appreciation of old crafts and techniques to excel design. “To Inspire and Elevate Design and Craftsmanship” was an important motto to keep in the attendees’ minds!

After the Inaugural speech, they started to honor every craftsman present at the Summit. All of them were called to the Stage and accepted awards that honor their work, legacy, and creativity. After that, Marco Martins, the Mayor of Gondomar, was called to the stage to give a speech about the role of Gondomar within the Arts and Crafts.

Also called to the stage was Carlos Sousa, representing the Department of Tourism of the North of Portugal. He reinforced the connection of Tourism with the Arts and the Craftsmanship but also supported the idea that this Summit is one more tool that defends the values and future of the Portuguese Industry and the Portuguese Commerce.

Before the first panel, Nicole Segundo, the representative of the Michelangelo Foundation, was the keynote speaker. This panel discussion featured a talk about the Mission of this Private Foundation that supports the Arts and Crafts. She was also the moderator for the first panel, where the theme was “A Dialogue Between Design And Artisanal Excellence”.

This panel took the participation of Christian Haas, from Christian Haas Studio, Emmanuel Babled, from the Babled Studio and Miguel Duarte that was representing the Fundação Espirito Santo. During the conversation, every member of the Panel agreed that the relation between Design and Craft is essential, but they also agree that the work that comes from a successful relationship between these two arts is equal to a unique work of art.

The last Panel of the day was devoted to the Present and Future of Craftsmanship. The speakers of the panel included Conceição Amaral of the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation, João Barros of PullCast, Rui Pinto an Artisan of PullCast, Joaquim Paulo – the leader of the Culture Project and Vitor Querido, a Top Artisan of the Culture Project. Through this Panel, there was a massive presence of the Pullcast brand, and also the statement that the craftsmanship is absolutely important!

Day 2

The final day of Summit started with an innovative and full of a personality Panel session with a Keynote speech by Carlos Coelho, a Marketing Specialist that gave an amazing Lecture about what Makes and Breaks a Brand! It reflected about the present and future of Design, Marketing, and Craftsmanship. Mr. Coelho promoted an incredible talk about what values Portugal, what values Design, what values a Brand.

The first Panel of the day had the name “Marketing: Winning High-End Consumers”, and it featured the presence of Maria José Martins (Moderator), Rita Sambado (Author), Ana Maria Vasconcelos (VP of APICCAPS), Ricardo Conceição (Entrepreneur), Miguel Costa (Entrepreneur – Bentley/ Lamborghini) and Carlos Coelho (Marketing Specialist). Through the conversation, Rita Sambado and Miguel Costa agreed that in Craftsmanship Design or in Auto Industries, what matters is the soul of the project and the spirit of the brand itself. Ana Maria Vasconcelos (Belcinto) and Ricardo Conceição (L’ Atelier des Créateurs ) joined the panel, where they presented their projects.

The last panel of the day had the theme “Designing & Crafting: Criteria to Excellence”, that was presided by Raquel Costa (Swarovski), Nini Andrade da Silva (Designer), Emmanuel Babled (Designer), Khaoula Ouerfelli and Duarte Eira (Chef). The top Portuguese interior designer, Nini Andrade da Silva began this last discussion, where she spoke about some of the most incredible projects within the hospitality area.

Emmanuel Babled proceeded the designer and explained his work as an Industrial Designer that involves many Craftsmanship methods. What followed was a presentation of Khaoula Ouerfelli and Raquel Costa about their respective brands; Maison Assouline and Swarovski! The panel quickly evolved into a sublime discussion about Design, Marketing and the Value of Craftsmanship and Natural.

The Summit beautifully ended with a Final Speech by Monica Seabra Mendes. She resumed the event with great class and creativity and, all in all, concluded to the success of this edition but also alluded to the success of the first edition and that allows this second edition to also shine.
