Fashion Designer Oscar de La Renta dies at 82

One of My Design Week’s fashion inspiration designers, Oscar de la Renta passed away yesterday at 82, just a few weeks after he named a new designer to replace him at his eponymous brand. During Paris Fashion Week in September, the house of de la Renta announced that Peter Copping, designer of Nina Ricci, as the new head designer.

De la Renta dressed American first ladies and Hollywood stars. Born in the Dominican Republic and having studied in Spain, his first job was alongside Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga. Oscar de la Renta as a label started in New York in 1965 – and he has been dressing first ladies, like Jacqueline Kennedy, and Hollywood stars ever since.

Just recently, de la Renta has made the dress for the dream wedding of Amal-Alamuddin to George Clooney. “George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress,” Amal Clooney told Vogue magazine.
