Design Inspirations: ALEXANDER LOTERSZTAIN

Mr. Lotersztain is one of Australia’s most exciting and dynamic designers. Born in 1977 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alexander Lotersztain is the director of Derlot Pty, Ltd. a multi-disciplinary studio with focus on projects as hotel design, interior design and art direction to national and international clients.

To this designer, travel has always been his main source of inspiration. He claims to be a “nomad”, Alexander affirms that he has seen the inside of enough hotel rooms to know what people want, and that is the main reason for him to create the design group Derlot – which has a holistic approach to hotel interiors.

His work appears in design journals around the world and can be found in the collection of the Pompidou Museum in Paris.

He is highly awarded in both product and interior design and in 2010 he was bestowed the inaugural Queensland Premier’s Smart State Designer of the Year fellowship award. He was named one of the 100 most influential designers worldwide in &fork by Phaidon and among the top 25 designers to collaborate with Monocle.

BIOGRAPHY: THE ALEXANDER BEFORE THE MYTH

Alexander Lotersztain – an Argentinian born Australian – is the designer and founder of the studio Derlot, a highly awarded studio specialized in product, furniture, interior design, but also in hotel concepts, branding, with a enormous list of clients, like Idee (Japan), Nestle (Switzerland), Virgin Australia Airline (Australia).

In 2011 Alexander expanded his studio by founding Derlot Editions to design, manufacture and distribute furniture and lighting to the global contract and domestic markets.

Most recently, he has been engaged by Virgin Australia to design new check-in area lounges for domestic airport terminals in Perth and Brisbane.

BACKGROUND & REALIZATIONS: BEST PROJECTS

Since a little boy, he traveled a lot with is parents. When he turned 17, a friend of him came from a six-month surfing tour of Australia raving about his experience and that’s when Alexandre decided that he had to check out the world by himself.

Graduated from Design at Griffith University QCA, in 2000, and after that he moved to Japan and start to work with GK. Few months later he has working with IDEE.

After Japan, Alexandre had lived in Barcelona and Milan, before he moved to Australia. He decided to live in Brisbane, which is not the usual design love, but exists a lot of opportunities there and also, the culture of design is growing and expanding there.

Some of his notorious projects are Chester Street Apartment, QTZ Collection, The Wooly Mammoth, Supadupa Sofa, Waterscape and Prisma Chairs.

THE MOST ICONIC PROJECTS

The Studio was commissioned to create the Limes Hotel in Brisbane and has overseen every aspect of the interior from bedroom design and layout to glassware for the bar. The approach is simple and clever and has been described as having “International appeal yet Australian charm”.

Of his design focus for Limes Hotel Lotersztain says, “I wanted to make the guest feel special, yet not afraid of jumping into the bed like it was their own”.
