What to expect from Dutch Design Week
This saturday, 78 venues across Einhoven will open their doors to the future for the 13th edition of the Dutch Design Week (check out last year’s edition highlights here). The moto of DDW is see with your own eyes how the world of tomorrow is already in the making today. And that is exactly what the 250,000 visitants expect to see. This year DDW will count with 2200 designers, 400 events including exhibitions, workshops, seminars and, of course, food and parties. The most renowned international design festival held in the Netherlands begins October 18th and ends October 26th. 2014’s edition has for a them UP – with connotations of progress and optimism.

Dutch Design Awards
The best of Dutch design, placed on pedestal and into perspective. This years edition has a shortlist of 25 finalists in 6 categories. (the full list of finalists can be seen here). The cerimony will be this saturday evening.
Do-it-yourself designs
DIY retailer KARWEI presents its new do-it-yourself designs: a one-off basic design collection of ten designs in total, including a table, a sofa and a bookcase. “Each item from the series has been designed to be made from a single sheet of underlayment. Not a single scrap of wood is wasted. The designs are simple to make yourself. DDW visitors get a free working drawing and instructions, and can set to work immediately.” – Matthijs van Ewijk, Brand Manager at KARWEI.
Damn Food Waste Restaurant
A third of the world’s entire food supply is wasted (economically speaking just in the Netherlands, wasted food adds up to around 4,4 billion euros per year). The Damn Food Waste pop-up restaurant will show you how delicious ‘wasted’ food actually is. Follow this iniciative: @DamnFoodWaste or www.facebook.com/DamnFoodWaste.
Young talent
As part of the future of design, companies are giving young talent a special attention this year. Abn Amro is presenting the results of Driving Dutch Design and sets up seven hotspots. Volvo is not only the initiator of a dual exhibition in the Klokgebouw, it will announce the winner of its design competition and provide the free taxis for the event.
